The Best Time for a Desert Safari in Dubai, Month by Month
We run safaris 365 days a year, so we've seen every version of the desert: February evenings that need two blankets, August afternoons that reorganise your priorities, and those ten perfect December sunsets everyone hopes for. Here's the honest calendar.
The short answer
November to March is prime desert season — warm afternoons (22–28°C), cool starry evenings, and the dunes at their photogenic best after winter winds re-sculpt them. October and April are excellent-value shoulder months. May to September works better than most visitors expect — but choose your time slot smartly.
Month by month
- December – February: The sweet spot. Daytime 20–25°C, evenings 10–14°C (bring a layer — see what to wear). Best months for the overnight safari: cold clear nights mean the Milky Way actually shows up. Book 2–3 days ahead in holiday weeks.
- March – April: Still lovely (25–33°C). Occasional shamal winds can stir sand on exposed ridges — dramatic light for photographers (see our photography guide), worth a scarf for everyone else.
- May – June: Hot afternoons (38°C+), but evening safaris start at 3 PM when the worst has passed, and by dinner the camp is genuinely pleasant. The 8 AM morning safari shines here: cool air, empty dunes, home before the heat.
- July – September: The desert's toughest months (40°C+ afternoons) — and, quietly, its best-kept secret: smallest crowds, easiest availability, and the dune bashing is identical once the sun drops. Hydrate, follow the morning-or-evening rule, and you'll wonder what the fuss was about.
- October – November: The desert switches back on. By late October evenings are balmy, camps get lively, and photographers get the year's clearest golden hours.
Which time slot?
- Evening (3 PM – 9 PM) — the classic, and what our AED 30 self drive package runs: sunset dune bashing, BBQ dinner, live shows. Right choice for first-timers in any month.
- Morning (8 – 11 AM) — sunrise light, cooler air, no crowds. Best in summer, and for travellers on short layovers. See the morning safari.
- Overnight (2 PM – 9 AM) — everything the evening offers plus stargazing and a desert sunrise. Best November–March. Full comparison in our format guide.
Full pricing across all three formats is on our pricing page.
Booking note: winter weekends and holiday dates (Christmas–New Year, Eid) fill fastest. The rest of the year, same-day WhatsApp bookings are almost always fine — message us or use our online booking form and we'll confirm in minutes.
Does it ever rain?
A handful of days per year, mostly January–March, and it rarely stops a safari — the sand firms up, the air clears, and the sunsets afterwards are spectacular. In the rare case weather forces a cancellation, we reschedule or refund in full — check our guest reviews for how we handle it.
